Millions of people face hunger and starvation throughout the world thereby making it an occurrence that needs urgent attention. In particular, over 1 billion citizens lack sufficient food.

The above phenomenon is nondiscriminatory as it affects people regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity and has a detrimental effect on their health as well as their lives (Collins 176). As such, it occurs in the developed countries as well as in the developing ones.

Body

It lowers the level of immunity of an individual hence making him/her vulnerable to diseases such as anemia. In fact, it makes the body so weak that it cannot withstand certain infections.

Most ailments arising from hunger are caused by a lack of iron in the body hence denying it valuable nutrients needed in the development of various organs (Swain 38). Such diseases find the starved body hospitable thereby leading to an increase in pathogens.

Hunger causes an increase in deaths due to lack of sufficient iodine. In particular, it facilitates the occurrence of measles and kwashiorkor that are deadly diseases. They ravage different body parts resulting in death.

High mortality rates lower the nation’s productivity.

Starvation also leads to stunted growth due to the emaciation that occurs. In fact, it also causes the loss of weight in people hence making them underweight and this development is risky to the normal functioning of the body (Kamberg 68).

Poor mental development is another characteristic of the above feature due to the psychological trauma caused to the victims especially the children.

Conclusion

A

Hunger has dire consequences for a population hence requires global effort in its eradication.
