The security implementation as well as design of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is complex, as it requires highly skilled personnel with greater competency to install superior configurations that can withstand alterations in the network. The rate of reliability for such a system is also challenging especially due to the inconsistencies associated with the use of certain internet providers. An increase in downtime would reduce the strength of the signals thereby hampering the communication flow (Held, 2004). As such, it requires higher costs than the average networks. Its scalability can also be jeopardized by any additional infrastructure due to compatibility issues as well. Technical issues would then arise leading to a halt in service production. In the event that a wireless connection is used, security concerns may arise since the probability of data leakage is high. Such a development would warrant the addition of extra malware prevention devices at a costly fee too.

In contrast, the deployment of a VPN is also beneficial as it offers better secure communication services because of its usage of advanced technology. In fact, the higher placement in locations offers protection from unauthorized access (Lewis, 2004). It also does not need variables for various types of communication while also ensuring that such interactions are done securely. As such, more users can be added to the network thereby facilitating growth using the new components. A VPN offers more flexibility as well thereby creating ease of communication with entities in remote locations over a vast geographical area. It therefore grants easy access to the users with minimal compromise on security. The deployment of firewalls is however advisable in order to create a shield that prevents interference of the VPN by outsiders.
