Conditioned behavior can be described as tendency to act in manner in which is involuntary due to an association to a particular stimulus. Since I was a child, I developed a fear for heights, which is psychologically termed as acrophobia. I would get very uncomfortable of motions when in high areas and feared I would fall every time I was elevated from the ground. As a toddler, I remembered I suffered to panic attacks. Firstly, I had gone hiking with my parents and on looking down the slope. I felt a wave of fear and panic simultaneously and could not move. The second time was when visiting my father’s workplace. He worked at the eighteenth floor. When I got into the elevator, I almost fainted and even vomited when I reached at the top floor.
I feel that this phobia has become a serious issue because it started developing when I was a child and I have not taken any step in eradicating it. My first encounter with falling from a high place was when I was six years old. I had requested my mother for some cookies as she dusted the house. She seemed to be quite preoccupied with her chores so I opted to get the cookies myself. I took a high stool from the kitchen counter and proceeded to climb in an attempt to retrieve the cookie jar from the cupboard. One hearing my mother’s steps towards the kitchen door, I fidgeted. This is because she had made it clear none of my siblings or I should pick anything from the kitchen without an adult’s supervision. On fidgeting, I fell on my face and lost a tooth. It was one of the most painful experiences as a child. Since that moment, I feared high places. Due to the extremities of my phobia, it has remained to be one of my top most fears and has greatly affected my life. I would like to change this phobia and become more accommodative and tolerant of high places.
