the importance of building a cooperative community among divergent worldviews in finding solutions

Group collaborative theory states  (Kouzes and Posner, 2003).  Members should exercise mutual respect in their efforts to build consensus, communicate their views and collaborate to ensure speedy and fruitful deliberations. Conformity is the greatest hindrance to collaboration. It discourages people from having and sharing their beliefs for fear of punishment and being disliked by others. Collaboration however encourages individuals to have their own thoughts but to keep an open mind to ensure personal growth. Juror number 8, at the beginning of the movie 12 Angry Men, proves collaboration in the heart of conformity can be tough but rewarding. Pitted against eleven other jurors with his ‘not guilty’ verdict, he demonstrates how taking control and forming a cooperative community and collaboration leads to great achievements within a society.

Cooperative value systems rather than mechanisms and systems dominated by individualistic efforts significantly aided the 8th juror to create a consensus among the vastly different worldviews present in their deliberation process. In choosing to stand alone, he necessitated the formation of a cooperative orientation and the start of dialog despite the strong objection of the other jurors. This further illustrated that group members are interdependent and individual success is dependent on the success of the team as seen by the requirements of a unanimous jury. The 8th juror exercised patience and respect in dealing with the others which set the tone for effective cooperation. In his firmness on his arguments, he endeavors to be accommodating and patiently listens to the others’ views.  Respectful listening and sincere consideration influences others in the group in a similar manner. This led to the group seeing things his way and returning a ‘not guilty’ verdict.
