Song: Roar

Summary:

Katy and her partner survive a plane crash after they take a trip to the jungle. She has always followed her partner and she does not make decisions for herself. Sometime after, a tiger attacks her partner. She is all alone and she has to learn how to survive the jungle with all the wild animals. As she adjusts to the jungle life, her attitude and perspectives in life change as well. Katy experiences a complete transformation and she realizes that her happiness and purpose in life inside her all this time.

Imagery

The singer uses similes and metaphors, which are essential in helping the listener to recreate images. She says that she has the eye of the tiger. This metaphor is aimed to show her sharpness of vision to the extent that she does not miss her target. She uses many similes in the song. For instance, “stinging like a bee”, “floating like a butterfly”, “like thunder gonna shake the ground”. She uses the similes to show comparison between the identified object and her new transformation. When she compares herself to a bee, this means that she has transformed. She is no longer the girl who accepts everything in life but she has learnt to become tough. Bees’ stings are painful and it is clear that the singer will not spare anyone or anything. She compares herself to thunder. She has become strong enough to the extent that she feels that she can shake the hard things in her life. At the same time, she compares herself to a butterfly. Butterflies are light and beautiful. The singer has become tough and strong and she has become free. She does not let her anxieties and fears pressure her, and she does not carry any burdens

Appeal to pathos

The singer appeals emotionally to the audience especially through the song lyrics and video. The song shows a determined person who has had to suffer a lot in life but she gets a chance to change her situation and she does so. It is easy for many people to identify with what the singer is experiencing emotionally as he watches the video. In the beginning, it is clear that she is intimidated by her partner and she does not know how to behave around him. Because of this, she is timid and she does not know how to speak for herself. The song also evokes emotions of fear as the inexperienced jungle traveler encounters many animals. It becomes evident that she does not have any experience dealing with any wild animals. However, as time progresses, the singer adjusts to life in the jungle. She has to learn how to survive and she becomes the female version of Tarzan. The viewer cannot help but experience a moment of pride as the singer learns to face her feared enemy. She is able to face the tiger and chase it away.

The song claims imagery as presented through metaphors and similes. The singer’s transformation as presented in the video as well as the lyrics of the song appeal to the audience emotionally. An emotional story is always more interesting than one which presents the facts in a straightforward way (Brader 24). The evident transformation of the singer from a person who wears heels to the jungle, to a woman who understands how to conquer her fear and understand her strength is a proud moment for her and anyone who has watched the video.
