Question 1
In all cultures, there are stories that talks about superheroes who accomplish outstanding deeds in order to save people from some danger. In the past, most superheroes were men including classic fictional characters such as Superman and Batman. However, recently there has been an increase in comic writers and movie producers to include women superheroes in their works. A case in point, “Ms. Marvel” recounts the tale of a Muslim girl Kamala who becomes a superhero and assist in fighting crime in the city.
Superheroes refer to fictional characters that have abilities and powers that may be considered to be beyond those of a normal human. For instance, they may possess incredible strength so that they can be able to annihilate big and strong monsters that terrorize the people. In addition, some of the superhero may fly so that they can be able to travel to distant places within a short time or to fight fictions space monsters. Moreover, in some cases superhero may have the ability to become invincible or to transform into powerful creatures such as werewolves. Therefore, the powers that a superhero may have vary from one character to the other only limited by their creator’s imagination.
Another thing to note is that superheroes are very rare. Even in comic books and movies, there are usually a few superheros. In the comic book Kamala claims, “My chances of becoming an intergalactic superhero are even slimmer than my chances of becoming blond and beautiful.” (Wilson 1). This indicates that in the early stages Kamala does not think that she might become a superhero by using the above sandwich quote. Moreover, it can be argued that for one to become a superhero they normally start as normal people or they are unaware of their power. Finally, there bodies undergo significant transformation for them to possess the power that they get to help them fight dangerous monsters or evil humans.
Question 2
Kamala and Maika differ from traditional superheroes in several ways. First, Kamala is among the few superheroes who are women. In addition, she is from a family that had migrated from Pakistan. Normally, in most comic books, superheroes are from America even if the settings may be in another different land. Therefore, having a superhero who is both a woman and Muslim is a bold move for the author to break the tradition of characterizing superheroes. In contrast, the traditional superheroes were usually Americans who were men such as Superman. Additionally, the traditional superheroes are represented to be Christians. For example, both Superman and Spiderman attend funerals of their relatives that are conducted by priests who quote the bible.
Traditional Superheroes normally used to fight monsters that were from outer space. Scholars argue that authors use the outer space to increase the magnitude of the danger significantly. For example, Kamala fantasizes fighting Rainbow Toots when he states, “Take that space creature.” However, in the case of Kamala, he does not fight space creatures or handle problems that threaten to destroy the whole planet.
Therefore, the comic book was a bold move to try to create gender equality by representing women as superheroes. In addition, the author limits the scope of the superhero to a local community in contrast to the past where the superheroes dealt with global issues that had an extraterrestrial dimension.
