My select observation points were the class, cafeteria, field, the park, and the library. I observed a person for as long as possible. Most of the people I saw in these places were young. Some were my age while others were slightly older then me. I think that roughly, I saw the same number of men and women.
I went to the class a little early so that I could get a good place to observe everything. I observed people before the lecturer started the lesson. People behaved differently when in class. Some were busy looking, at their books and other materials. Most of them talked to each other. Others chose to listen to something using their music as was evidenced by the earphones in their ears. Only a few people were like me, as I sat observing others.
I went to the cafeteria some minutes before noon. I did not expect to see many people. However, I did find a few. What surprised me was that I saw the same behavior as I had seen in class. The activities that people did in class were the same ones they did at the cafeteria. They looked at their phones, read a book, talked to each other, and looked around. The people using their phones could have used them for different purposes including texting. Things changed as more people increased during lunch. Many people came to the cafeteria accompanied by their friends. Many people talked as they ate. I noted that in many groups, there was one dominant person who seemed to talk more than the others did.
The environment at the library was different. It was very quiet and very few people were inside. Those who there were busy reading their books. Many of them wrote something on their books. Some had more than three books at their table. Others stood along the shelves selecting the books they wanted to read. The atmosphere at the library gave me adequate time to observe people’s facial expression. Most of them reacted to what they were reading. This included those who were standing by the bookshelves and those who were already studying. There was an intense look of concentration.
I went to the field sometime in the afternoon. Many people in the field sat on the grass talking to each other. Some were using their phones to take photos or take videos. I saw two or three people running around the field. People were loud and they talked freely. I could hear some of the conversations taking place. Many of the people in the field were couples. I concluded this based on their close proximity and intimate actions.
The people I observed at the park were different from the groups I had observed elsewhere. They varied in terms of age and behavior. Many of them were adults. A few of them had small children. Most of the adults were sitting alone. A few of them read newspapers, magazines, or books. Many of them just sat down staring ahead. A few talked among themselves. They conversed in low tones. Many of the people I saw in the park ranged from about thirty to fifty years. However, there were a few older people. Many of the older people were accompanied. Some of them sat with their friends of the same age. They mostly laughed, talked, or smiled. I saw a few of them feeding birds. At one point, I saw a young woman singing and playing her guitar. She was alone and she looked straight ahead as she sang.
