Hamlet Part III
In the act two and scene two of Hamlet, Shakespeare brings out a soliloquy of Hamlet that depicts his nature, thoughts and motives. In the context, Hamlet’s preparation to get the attention and conscience of the king turns out a success. On the other hand, Claudius has retired to his chamber distraught. Hamlet is exuberantly thrilled by the turn of events and is confident of carrying out revenge and that he could kill his uncle. However, Claudius is not within reach and this causes hamlet to focus on his mother. Although he loves his mother, he has to be cruel in order to get her admission of her guilt.
Hamlet says, “Is it not monstrous that this player here, but in a fiction, in a dream of passion, could force his soul so to his own conceit. That from her working all his visage wann’d,
Tears in his eyes, distraction in’s aspect” (Roberts and Zweig 1324). From this first part of the soliloquy, we learn that Hamlet had been short of confidence in his own abilities. He is now motivated to exert revenge on his uncle. Hamlet is calculative and opportunistic. He has several schemes and ideas intended on harming his uncle without a second thought or point of conscience able to deter him from his plot.
In the second part of the soliloquy, hamlet says, “My tongue and soul in this be hypocrites because he knows that he must feign violent intentions towards his mother, and that his words must express those false intentions” (Roberts and Zweig 1324). It is clear from the excerpt that hamlet is cruel and inconsiderate even to his own mother, yet he claims that he loves his only mother. He seems to revel in the agony of his parent without seeking alternative measures.
