Genitalia Surgical Procedure to enhance Sexual Pleasure

Human sexuality is the ability of an individual to have erotic responses and experiences. A person’s sexual attraction and interests towards other people may be influenced by his or her sexual orientation. Sexuality might take three aspects namely spiritual, emotional and reproductive. In regards to the spiritual aspect, sexuality refers to companionship. For instance, in Christianity, God later created Eve to be Adam’s companion. In regards to reproduction, sexuality refers to the natural biological drive, which is hormonally controlled in all species. Finally, emotional sexuality refers to the bond, which exists between individuals, and is expressed through physical manifestation or profound feelings of care, love and trust.

A person can be classified as a homosexual or heterosexual. Based on her orientation, a woman can be straight if she is a heterosexual, or a lesbian, in the case that she is a homosexual. Despite her sexual orientation, a woman’s interest in sexual activities tends to increase as she attains her puberty. However, the level of sexual pleasure might be affected due to certain factors such as pain, arousal or orgasmic disorders. These disorders may arise from dysfunctions, diseases or physical abuses. To overcome these disorders, women might opt for genitalia surgical procedures, commonly known as female genital cosmetic surgeries, to enhance their sexual pleasure. These procedures would include vaginal tightening, public liposuction, labia minora reduction, clitoral hood reduction, g-spot amplification among other surgical operations. Most of these operations are aimed at enhancing sexual pleasure for the woman and her heterosexual partner during intercourse.

Literature Review

Since its conception, female genital cosmetic surgery has faced significant opposition from a section of the public. People opposed to its practice have associated it with female genital mutilation (FGM). FGM, which is still practiced by many cultures in Africa, is deemed as a cruel act that goes against the rights of women (Braun & Tiefer, 2010). However, those advocating for the procedures have argued that the FGM cannot be compared to female genital cosmetic surgeries because the prior is forcefully carried out while the later is a voluntary practice. Female genital cosmetic surgery began in the early 1980s. Pornographic movies and pictures of women with ‘ideal’ vaginas encouraged many others to opt for surgical alterations (Braun, 2005). However, the main reason that fueled the genital surgical procedures was the increasing number of high-profile surgeons.

Even though the main reason as to why women opt for these surgeries is to enhance pleasure, other factors also influence their decisions. Firstly, a woman’s age plays a major role in the decision making process. Several researches have identified that the type of procedure varies with age. For instance, women in their early twenties opt for labiaplasty (Braun, 2010). This is because many of them seek to have an ‘ideal’ vagina. Conversely, those in their late forties undergo surgical procedures to tighten their vagina (Braun, 2010). This is because they feel that due to events such as natural childbirth, they vagina became less tight. Secondly, some women feel that by not having an ‘ideal’ vagina, they might loose their partners to other younger girls. For a married couple, this might even lead to a divorce or extramarital affairs.

Thirdly, some women might have suffered from events that caused damaged to their vaginas. Damage to the vagina can be caused by accidents, rape or female genital mutilation. To ease the pain and eliminate the discomfort, these women might opt for vaginal ‘repair’. Fourthly, women, especially those with extremely huge labia, might go for surgical procedures due to hygiene concerns. They might experience personal hygiene problems during menstruation or get embarrassed by toilet paper sticking on their labia. These discomforts might encourage them to go for an operation in order to reduce the size of their labia. Plastic and reconstructive surgeons are actively involved in producing advertisements that are targeted at these women. This is because many of them have psychological problems or low self-esteem. Women with poor sex lives will be easily lured by these advertisements and resort for surgical sexual transformation (Schick, Calabrese, Rima & Zucker, 2010).

Despite the benefits that might come along with these procedures, female genital cosmetic surgeries might also pose significant risks and complications. Some of these procedures are very risky and painful. Furthermore, these procedures might cause destruction of sensitive genital tissues. Female genital cosmetic surgeries, such as the removal of clitoral hood, might reduce sexual arousal. This is because the labia tissues that have been removed play a vital role in creating sexual pleasure during intercourse. Apart from these risks, female genital cosmetic surgeries might also cause vaginal disfigurement, unevenness, pelvic floor dysfunction, haematoma formation and death of tissues along the wounded or lost skin (Malone, 2013). Such risks and complications might lead to death or another surgery to rectify prior mistakes.

Thesis Statement

Even though female genital cosmetic surgeries might have several benefits to women, such as enhancing sexual pleasure, some of these procedures are very risky and painful, and might lead to health or sexual complications. Despite the fact that the complication rates are very low, women should still be very cautious while opting for these procedures. However, there are circumstances whereby female genital cosmetic surgeries are very helpful in eliminating discomfort and pain.
