Foundation of the State of Israel

Foundation of the State of Israel

The foundation of Israel is underpinned by deep-seated religious and political themes.

The main argument in the process of creating the state of Israel was the issue of ownership of native land. On one hand, the Jews held the belief that Palestine represented the Promised Land that was mentioned in the Old Testament (Avineri 19). Therefore, after facing stiff resistance and persecution in Germany and parts of Europe, a massive number of Jews relocated and sought to occupy their rightful place as inhabitants of Palestine. On the other hand, Arabs who were already occupying Palestine refused to relinquish their hold over the region (Shiff 56). The United Nations proposed splitting Palestine between the two factions in 1947. Shiff (2014) noted that this proposal was rejected by Arabs who assumed that they were the rightful occupants of Palestine. The unfair allotment of Palestinian land to the Jews triggered civil wars that continued even after the official declaration of the State of Israel in 1948. The first video titled “The 1948 Israeli War of Independence” reflects the Israeli view. It displays the way in which the newly formed Israeli state sought to fight for its own independence from the greater Palestine. Conversely, the second film, “”Al Nakba”–The Palestinian Catastrophe of 1948” shows the way in which Palestinian ethnic cleansing occurred in 1948. This was clearly from a Palestinian perspective and sent a message on the need to maintain ethnic purity within Palestine. In both videos, Arabs and Israelis present themselves as the superior and rightful ethnic groups to occupy and control land resources within Palestine. There is also an element of disgust, disrespect, and open disregard for the other race. Both videos offer a biased view of the whole series of events. They deliberately omit the real cause of the conflict and the role played by Arabs and Israelis in continuing the state of affairs. In the You Tube videos, Arabic and Israeli cultural music and elements are infused to increase the legitimacy of their claims and downplay the claims of the other ethnic group.
