McDonalds focuses on ways of improving and ensuring the quality of its products, hence its insistence on standardization. The company realizes that if it guarantees food quality from the very beginning, then its customers will be assured of the products that they get and that there will be no surprises. Over the years, the food on offer has varied across the country as the company looks for more ways of enhancing customer experience and guaranteeing satisfaction. The company has incorporated different menus to suit diverse tastes. Around the world, the company has introduced a variety of changes that are aimed at localizing. The changes are meant to cultivate a sense of belonging among the people and make them feel that they can get something familiar in a restaurant. Hence, even though someone in Japan will get the same hamburger as a person in America, he or she will also have other options that reflect his/her culture. Some of the foods offered there are not available in America. This dispels the notion that local culture is invisible and irrelevant. The use of standardization techniques has ensured the production of quality products, which are delivered more efficiently
McDonalds has changed its product offerings by increasing the amount of different foods and drinks available on its menu. Like many fast food chains across the country, the company has become aware of people’s changing taste buds. People have become more conscious of their health. They do not want to eat food that is harmful to their health. Because of this, they are looking for ways of including healthy variety options in their diets. Although McDonald’s main focus remains serving fast foods to the customers, it has looked for ways of ensuring that people have healthier choices. This is evident in its decision to replace some of the unhealthy ingredients with healthier alternatives, as well as the inclusion of healthy foods in its menu.
McDonald’s remains a major employer in the country. It continues to employ many people who lack the skills or the experience. This is the situation in many fast food places in the country. Young people who are fresh from school get their first jobs in fast food restaurants. McDonalds remains a major choice of employment for many people because of its wide coverage. Many people are assured that they will get a store near them. Those who are hired get a chance to learn new skills through the training they receive. The experience they get at the company prepares them for other work in the future.
Franchisees have to undergo a training program with the company. They also attend annual classes where they learn any updates concerning the business. This is meant to ensure quality service delivery. The franchise stores do not have to undertake the training frequently. The company wants to ensure that the operations in one franchise do not differ greatly with those of another franchise. The company requires that all its stores have a specific look that the customers can identify with since it is the symbol of the chain. In addition, they want to ensure that the customers will have the same experience whenever they visit any McDonald store. However, the owners have a big influence in other issues and they still maintain some level of autonomy in selecting staff.
McDonalds remains the most advertised brand in the country. The company is committed to ensure that the brand remains recognized around the world. Therefore, it is willing to invest in brand awareness. Advertising serves different functions. It makes the customers aware of the company and its products. It informs the customers of any new changes concerning the restaurant. It is a way for the company to demonstrate to the shareholders that it is still in operation. In addition, through advertisements customers can learn more about the stores. For instance, from the layout in the television commercials, customers get a chance to learn about expected behavior. They will know that a store is self-service if they do not see waiters serving customers. Competition in the fast food industry has driven many businesses to conduct aggressive marketing. In the case of McDonald the company wants to ensure that as many people as possible remain committed to the brand. McDonalds have capitalized on the knowledge that in most cases, parents make decisions based on their children’s desires. Therefore, their advertisements are often directed towards children. This is a common phenomenon in the fast food industries. Each company realizes that it has a specific market and it directs its adverts towards that specific market. The companies are interested in attracting as many people as they can.
Many companies in the fast food industry are changing the way they schedule their employees’ time. Some are choosing to use automated machines for scheduling. This has created problems for the workers since it means that they will not be able to plan their time and other obligations well. In some cases, workers do not have time to rest, especially when there is high demand. Some companies do not take the time to issue their employees with a work schedule early in advance and this throws their life off balance. Leidner (1993) notes that workers’ lives are disrupted, and parents have a hard time scheduling for social activities and childcare. The situation has intensified over the years, with more workers struggling to juggle between work, family, and school. Most of the people who are working in the fast food industry want a chance to improve their lives and they have enrolled in school. Some of them are single parents and they are not able to find a way to balance all the things they want to do. Workers are no longer able to schedule their time based on when they will be available and they have to depend on their managers to find a relatively stable work schedule.
The company has continued using standardization and automation in everything and this has affected the way the workers interact with the customers. The idea of using automated programs for everything has removed the personal touch that is expected in the service industry. Many fast food companies compete on this end. They not only want to satisfy their customers’ demands and requests, but they also want them to feel welcome. Automation may be efficient but it lacks the same personal feel. Some of the fast food companies are looking into ways of using robots and other automated machines for different functions. If more companies are to adopt such systems and technologies, then the face of the industry will change drastically. Many unskilled workers will lack the means to get an income and this will lower their living standards.
Although work in the fast food industry is often for those who do not have sufficient skills. It is often hard and challenging to do. This is especially the case when there is high demand and there are few workers to do it. In addition, some customers make the work more difficult and they can be extremely demanding. Many employees have complained of customers who have unrealistic expectations and others who are rude. Such customers intensify the work that the employees have to do. In some cases, they test their patience to the extent that a manager has to intervene. In most McDonalds, the supervisors often handle most of the customer complaints. When there is high demand and inadequate training, many workers, especially those who are inexperienced, can mess up the customers’ orders.
There is a high turnover in the fast food industry. This is mostly because many people who are looking for employment in the industry are only doing so on a temporary basis. Some want a chance to gain work experience as they look for a better job elsewhere, while others want to do something that can give them their daily upkeep as they struggle between work and school. The low wages in the industry does not help the situation. Many people in the industry complain about the poor and unfavorable working conditions, which are compounded by the poor pay. They boycott work and they hold demonstrations demanding for a review in their reward packages. Others want some form of stability in their work schedules that will enable them to manage the rest of their lives in a better way.
The fast food industry has changed in terms of competition. Increased competition in the industry has compelled many companies to change the way they operate. Many companies have increased the products on their menus and some have found it convenient to have healthier options. Companies have embarked on major marketing drives and they have invested a lot in advertising. All companies understand their target audience and their advertisements are directed towards them. However, despite all the changes, the companies’ focus remains serving fast foods to their customers. Even though many companies have adopted technology, they realize that their success depends on the service that they provide to their consumers. Although many of the people employed in the fast food industry are low skilled workers, the work they have to do is demanding in terms of the effort and the time they put in it
