Engineering – Where are the girls and why aren’t they here?: Dr. Jenna Carpenter at TED Monroe

The talk commences with the elaboration on the difficulty experienced by girls during their junior high schools in terms of dealing with hard subjects such as mathematics. The primary issue demonstrated by the speakers is that girls turn away from subjects perceived to be difficult such as science and mathematics. She explains that fewer girls enroll for engineering courses and become major scholars. This trend has been observed for the past two decades. According to the speaker, the consequent effects of this perspective are the development of implicit bias and macro insults, which is considered more damaging than the stereotype itself as they cumulate making it deterrent for women in career fields.

In the modern day world, women face substantial bias particularly in fields that are considered male dominated. Such bias is known as implicit bias, which actually affects the demonstration of the values of the particular interviewee, or employer. Implicit bias can be considered a cultural fact thus many people consider it less likely to affect people. However, the speaker encourages cultural change, which overrides implicit bias, and employ other justifiably means of choosing people such as objective criteria rather than formed opinions that are more damaging. Perpetuation of stereotype are highly discouraged as it has played a role in turning brilliant women from engineering and science, in which, if properly motivated can lead to amazing breakthroughs owing to their contribution on the same.

Engineering and science have been stereotyped as a course which are boring characterized by white laboratory coats and nerds rather than disciplines that are geared towards providing interdisciplinary solutions such as clean water access, development of new treatments and pharmaceutical products for the worsening global health, deterioration of infrastructure and catering to the ever increasing energy needs. Such issues are elaborate in providing more opportunities for engineers and scientists, which essentially allows them to transform the world into a more sustainable habitat for the future generations. It is important to attract more female students with impartiality in their socio-economic status in order to engage them in scientific and engineering courses to make the world a better place for the future of the global population. This is primarily because, from the kindergarten stage, girls study harder than their counterparts, they also elaborate more value for education as compared to boys. Additionally, in matter concerning higher education, female college students outnumber men in college and a higher likelihood to graduate (“Engineering – Where are the girls and why aren’t they here?: Dr. Jenna Carpenter at TEDxMonroe.”). Thus, based on this statistics, women and girls should be attracted in order to have diversity in the workplace and an adequate work pool of scientists and engineers in order for the world to maintain innovation in technological departments as well as solving complex scientific issues.
