Domestic Violence

Domestic violence refers to abusive behaviors in a relationship. The perpetrators of these violent acts aim at controlling their partners by use of physical, sexual, or psychological means. The outcomes of such activities include intimidation, fear, or visible injuries (Gerdes, 2012). Domestic violence is a major problem in all regions of the world. For instance, a law court in Las Vegas jailed Suge Knight in 2008 after attaining substantial evidence indicating that he physically assaulted his girlfriend. Based on the investigations conducted by the police, the criminal assaulted his partner before attempting to stab her with a knife. Statistics show that such cases have increased sharply in the recent past with the number of people dying or sustaining serious injuries from such violent acts rising on a daily basis.

Based on this devastating societal problem, there are various measures adopted by the community in order to suppress such crimes. To start with, various rescue centers offer accommodation to victims of domestic violence in addition to aiding them in acquiring legal assistance. However, most of these shelters only cater for females and children despite the significant number of male victims. Furthermore, there have been several public forums aimed at enlightening the general population on the need to shun violent acts in relationships. Through these informative sessions, victims of domestic violence acquire useful information regarding the appropriate measures of dealing with such acts. The involvement of local authorities such as the police has also been helpful in curbing domestic violence especially due to the introduction of stringent legal stipulations regarding this subject matter (Gerdes, 2012). Individuals charged with domestic violence serve long jail terms, a facet that has aided in reducing the incidences of violence in the family settings.
