Controversial Issues in Education
Sensitive issues have a personal, social, political impact and arouse feelings that deal with questions of belief or value. In the United States of America, various issues affect the education sector. Incarceration, unfair judgment, unfair sentencing, and the law are some of the controversial issues that affect education. The most discussed topic is that of education verses incarceration. Diverse scholars have always wondered how some of the punishment held against prisoners still stand despite them being unrealistic. As expected, minor offenders have little time in prison while the major offenders have longer periods. However, this is not the case in most states in the United States of America. This topic sparked various discussions among them being Carl Cannon’s argument that petty crimes are outrageous. Government policies regarding security and imprisonment have a negative impact on the education sector.
It is unethical to persecute offenders with harsh punishments that are not proportional to their crimes. According to the constitution, conviction of offenders depends on the crime committed. However, some offenders have a tendency of repeating the same crime repeatedly. They still repeat the same mistake even after serving their respective jail terms. This statement formed the backbone of Cannon’s argument. His opening remarks reflected on ways through which America could reduce such scenarios. Basing on his introduction, he offered an example of a repeated offender, Andrade Leandro. This 37-year-old man stole kids videos from a store and the local police charged him with petty crime. Two weeks later, the same man repeated the same mistake. However, this time round, the law allocated him with 50 years imprisonment. Leandro’s case received different insights and respond from the American nation. The jail term is harsher than expected. This should not be the case because it is unfair to the offender and his family. The education of children from such families is interfered often because they lack people to support them both emotionally and financial in school. This causes a negative impact on the education sector.
Moreover, politicians in the region resolved to harsh conditions that they believed would reduce the crime rate. However, this is ethically wrong. Every individual in any region needs to receive fair judgment regardless of his or her wrongdoing. Focusing on Andrade’s case, sentencing him for 50 years is unethical. This is because when comparing the punishment with the offence, together with those other offenders, it is evident that the judgment was unfairly. People from different races more so the black Americans receive jail terms that are thrice that of Americans whereas, Latino’s receive twice the number of years of an average American. All this boils down to the fact that they are unfair and have a negative impact on the education system. Among these offenders are minor ones who end up wasting their lives in prison and drop out from school. This causes a negative impact on the education system.
Serving a longer jail term does not necessarily mean that the prisoner will change his ways. This is just but an alternative method of separating offenders from other citizens. As much as it is beneficial to the residents, it may also be a political ploy by politicians in acquiring a safe win during elections. This method is also disadvantageous in that it increases the number of prisoners. Since 1980, the number of prisoners in the U.S. keeps increasing yearly with the latest consensus showing that the prison population is approximately 2.3 million. The pride of having perpetual offenders locked up in prison comes with a price. The high number of prisoners only reducing the percentage of the workforce in the nation and increases the dependency ratio. This means that the people outside prisons have to pay more tax in order to cater for the rising prison population since California alone contributes about $750 million toward their upkeep. This is one of the implications of convicting offenders to longer jail terms and the education sector is the most affected.
Additionally, about two-thirds of imprisonment spending involves deals at national levels. This means that the government has to remove some its yearly revenue in order to cater for the upkeep of the prisons. Hence, the well-being of offenders forces the government to withdraw large sums of money from other sectors such as health, education and transport. Further, due to the increased population of offenders, the state actually withdraws more money from these sectors. Keeping in mind that the income tax is relatively lower because the number of employees is lower, the amount of money remaining in various sectors is lower and most of the times inadequate. This causes a negative impact on the education sector because most of reduce funds. Eventually, the funds in this sector reduces and results in reduced infrastructure among other factors. Hence, the educational sector is bound to deteriorate with time.
The policies set up by many government officials focuses mainly on security than on other sectors. On numerous occasions, it is evident that congressional members tend to advocate for security issues. Notably, the numbers of policies placed on security are more than the educational sector. For instance, the high security measures placed yield to the arrest and persecution of more offenders. This scenario results in an increased number of prisoners and the resources allocated to them become minimal. Since the government cannot realease prisoners due to lack of resource such as clothing and food, this forces the government to construct more prisons. This means withdrawal of relatively more funds from the government revenue. The presence of more prisons encourages the government to focus on security issues even more and this affects the education sector.
Another controversial issue is whether the policies imposed on offenders affects the success of a school. Observing strict measures in states offers assurance of the security of members. It is agreeable that members of the society who raise suspicion have to undergo scrutiny in order to sort out the unclear circumstances. However, having suspicion and eventually convicting members of the public with no reason is actually wrong. In the case of Monica, her case displays greater lengths of unfairness. The fact that her name is present in the list of people who bought guns does not necessarily mean that she was planning to use it. According to her explanations, she never even has to touch the gun. Conversely, the police have their own philosophy about the whole issue. They claim to have arrested her because of her past criminal record. This situation raised controversial issues because if prison is a correctional facility and those released have changed their ways, then arresting people because of their past offence depicts otherwise. Hence, students fail to learn about trust the ability of a person to stand by their words, which does not facilitate learning n a school.
Large investments in the imprisonment of individuals from selected neighborhoods correspond to disinvestment in education in the same region. In areas with the highest number of incarcerations, the school performances’ of that region are poor. In such regions, the number of children dependant on government schools is relatively higher because most of their parents are in prison and cannot afford to put them in private schools. Additionally, such areas lack proper infrastructure. As a result, most schools become congested. Congestion in classes reduces the learning rate and students are limited from acquiring resources. It is clear that due to the lack of these factors, students in such regions tend to perform poorly in class. This affects the education sector in a negative way.
In occurrences where students present poor performance in schools, there is a higher likelihood that there would be an increase in crime. This is because their poor performance discourages them from studying by lowering their morale. Therefore, most of them resolve to dropping out of school since it is their only alternative solution. Due to idleness, most of them engage in crime and go to jail once they proven guilty. The levels of education in the region lower as the crime rate increases. This lowers the economy due to low finances. The education sector depreciates due to lower funds and the poor performance.
Many controversial issues affect the education sector. The most common is the government policy on crime. It places more focus on the security sector forgetting the rest. The most affected is the education sector because the funds allocated to this sector end up in the security division in a bid to protect the citizen. Conversely, all sectors are equal and both demand same levels of seriousness. Placing considerations on one sector than the other, leads to a deteriorating economy. The education of the nation is as much important as the security department. Therefore, government policies regarding security have a negative impact on the education sector.
