Comparison between Camus and de Beauvoir

Camus and de Beauvoir shared most of their academic ideas in the beginning. Both had chosen the same style of expression that involved using stories, plays, and essays. Both authors used these and other methods to relay their philosophical arguments to the public and their peers. In several ways, both Simone de Beauvoir and Camus share several principles and opinions. de Beauvoir occasionally contrasts their ethical stands with an ethics of absurdity, proposing that their moral ambiguity is essentially dissimilar from the absurdist stand. On the other hand, Camus occasionally compares his theory of absurdity with nihilism. In his approach, he allocates a massive amount of literature to address the unambiguous denial of nihilism. If one vigilantly analyzes the connotations that both de Beauvoir and Camus append to the phrases nihilism, ambiguity, and absurdity, it becomes evident that for de Beauvoir, absurdity represents fundamental nihilism, and that this form is precisely rejected by Camus in the first place. In spite of these slight differences, both de Beauvoir and Camus attempt to keep away from two stands that in their opinion are completely intolerable, namely a theoretical viewpoint that contains absolute values, and a theoretical stand where all values are eliminated.

The last comparison between Camus and Simone de Beauvoir looks at the value of human life. In her book The Ethics of Ambiguity, de Beauvoir offers a wide opportunity for a suicide as an ethically acceptable behavior. However, she made sure that detailed restrictions were included. However, Camus definitely refuted such likelihood. He argued that taking one’s life is tantamount to rejecting the beauty present in the universe. This is considered a legal alternative only in severe conditions. The other alternative for Camus is adopting a belief or a form of vague religion, as an individual who has embraced the reality of intrinsic insignificance, amounts to either logical idleness, emotional flaws or a combination of the above. It is to state that reality is too hard to take in and believe, and that one has opted to admit something false since it is easier. Their conflict concerning the suicide matter is not a direct indication of the differences of views concerning fundamental philosophical theories.

However, the two scholars also had massive differences in their philosophy. Simone de Beauvoir supported the existentialism approach that is the conviction that life is only significant when compared to the individual’s conditions specifically his feelings and opinions. The individual is responsible for allocating meaning in his life regardless of all the negative forces that affect him such as tediousness or estrangement. As an existentialist, de Beauvoir did not believe in a divine being. However, she did believe God was the creator who failed to give man any devices. There are numerous different versions to this principle, so this is a generalization. Conversely, Camus’ absurdism is an extreme viewpoint. Absurdism is the principle that life has no meaning in the universe. Therefore, man’s efforts to look for such significance are absurd since that meaning is non-existent. Variations of Camus’ absurdism have a vaguely different viewpoint, that meaning exists, but it is unachievable. The only aspect that injects meaning in life is absurdism and that humans should accept that life is meaningless for their survival. In this way, man should accept that life is absurd and learn to deal with the meaninglessness.
