Business Model/Category (for your assignments):
The company is an airline flights retailer that sells tickets directly to the public
The business module assigned to be is selling the tickets on the internet. The name of the company is Expedia Inc. This company has their own sales agents who vend airplane tickets for flights that ply routes across Europe and North America. They also sell tickets for hotels, lodges, and resorts.
The airline industry is characterized by aggressive competition between the top companies over several aspects including dynamics over sources of revenue; the role-played in the transport sector and economic ramifications.
The website is designed using a basic template with limited facilities. The outlay of the home page contained an image background of an airplane with the website title “Expedia” on the top left corner. The home page was designed in an open style that allowed the user to navigate through all the necessary options without necessarily scrolling down. The most prominent aspect of the homepage was the “Search Flights” section. This HTML 5 widget was designed using a form (Qualman 2009). The form had the alternative to search a free flight as well as hotels and transportation. Other alternatives on the home page were options for double booking as well as the trending destinations to visit in 2015.
The menu was placed on the first page in a straight line. It contained the necessary links to pages for navigation for users and staff. They include home, bundle deals, cruises, deals, and rewards among other links.
The Expedia website lacks a dedicated “about” page at the header of the website. However, towards the footer of the same home page, there is an “About” link alongside other elements of the same company. This page discussed the history of the company as a travel service provider. The page also had additional information such as investors and investments, careers at Expedia Inc., and the relevant partners in the industry.
The Expedia website lacks a “Contact Us” page. However, it has a customer support and feedback page that contains help topics on different attractions and services offered by the company. These included cruises, taxi, hotels, and flights. The exact location of phone numbers, email addresses, and the physical location was unclear. However, it compensated for this by providing different contact points such as social media sites (McHarry 2013).
The Expedia website had a policy link towards the footer of the home page. The Privacy Policy link contained a list of provisions as well as assumptions typically made by both the company and clients (WordPress 2010). The company specifically outlined the privileges they enjoyed as well as the limits of their authority (Surblyte 2015). For instance, the page mentioned that Expedia shared client information with suppliers, third-party vendors, and business partners (Cooper 2014).
Components and features will be added in the final project
The website is in need of high-resolution pictures that improve the appearance and quality of the company. In particular, the addition of pictures displaying the holiday locations, tourist attraction sites, and other activities will enhance the website. Related to high-definition images are rollover and GIFs (Jones, & Farrington 2011). These are excellent alternatives to high-definition images as they are lighter, and this implies faster loading even on poor Internet connections (Leary 2010). Social media feeds can also be included in the plan to improve the images on the site. Sites such as Instagram can attract and keep interested customers on the site (Silver 2011).
There is a need for the inclusion of quality graphics in the buttons used for links as well as other navigation tools. In particular, the links on the home page will be replaced with appealing images. This will enable first time users to be impressed and navigate around the pages (Silver, Hayder, Jordan, Bhat, & Thewlis, 2009). 3D icons and images are very useful for creating a website theme that compliments the anticipated feeling demanded by the company.
This option will allow the Expedia customer care to communicate with customers. It will also allow customers and the company to maintain a connection (MacDonald 2012).
This last option is strictly for revenue purposes. An inclusion of sidebars can allow the website to attract advertisements from other companies (Król, & Silver 2013). Given that the website is bound to attract a lot of traffic, online advertisements can generate significant revenue for the company (Bell 2013).
Features and functionalities incorporated
The website is a payment portal for making online payments. This implies that nearly all of the customers will expose sensitive data including their bank account numbers, PIN numbers, and other financial information (Silver 2010). It will be necessary to include a two-step verification process that ensures all financial transactions are secure. Another inclusion that will improve the security during transactions is collaborating up with other reliable companies such as Pay Pal (Moore 2013).
Major changes implemented form the initial plan
Numerous changes have been implemented in the quest to transform the website into a more efficient and user-friendly site. However, I have dropped most of the aspects presented in the initial proposal and presentation. This is because the team does not acknowledge the elements and features that were provide by the company. However, the biggest changes were done in the website structure.
