Week 7 Assignment

The healthcare team responsible for the treatment of the elderly man should place him on the respirator. This would be the right thing to do both morally and scientifically. Part of the dilemma that most physicians find themselves in is that they have to base their actions on the premise that they tried their best to save the patient. Similarly, the family and other well-wishers always remain hopeful that all possible avenues for recovery have been exhausted before they think about the sick person succumbing to the disease or injuries. Thus, both parties cannot allow themselves to be overwhelmed by emotions, as this would cloud their judgments (Davies, 2008). By placing him on the machine, the probability of the elderly man stabilizing would be higher.

Despite the patient’s lack of communication with the medical team and his family members, he has not been declared either clinically or physically dead. It would be wrong to imagine that such a situation merits him to be left unattended. Whereas the daughter could be religious and invoking her faith to plea for him not to be placed on a respirator, making use of the device ensures that his life is prolonged. Since the equipment is designed to ease his breathing and prevent him from inhaling harmful substances that could worsen his situation. As such, his safety would be assured. Moreover, the notion of his health deteriorating is contained and this is bound to offer comfort to his loved ones. Hence, the reduction in the level of anxiety could spiral to other relatives thereby limiting the emotional pain caused by this ordeal. Such circumstances also aid in the health care team making rational decisions since they have grown connected to the case.

Similarly, the respirator would be ideal in detecting and recording any changes in the man’s condition no matter how slight they may be. This information could prove useful to his examiners because it would be used to modify the diagnosis and a relevant prescription made to cure the illness as need arises. Furthermore, it is safer to have the device according to the son’s wishes since he would be assisted to breathe and this could result in the normal functioning of some of his organs. In contrast, without the appliance, the elderly man would have trouble whenever he regains consciousness and that could be fatal depending on the duration the physicians take to respond to such an emergency. The latter is possible especially in a busy health facility where doctors and nurses are attending to other patients as well. Consequently, it is vital for the health professionals to install the apparatus in order to maintain their integrity and credibility (Purtilo, 2010). This makes them not to be exposed to the risks of negligence.

Denying the sick person this service would be akin to embracing spirituality to heal him yet such a drastic step is not reliable in the face of mounting scientific evidence to the contrary. Therefore, they need to follow his son’s instructions and do all that is humanly possible to keep him alive, as that would be the only way to extend the patient’s life and make the relatives less miserable. In addition, it would boost the morale of the nurses since their conscious would be clear about the help they contributed in the case despite any outcome in the future.
