Article Summary

The article titled “Kiribati’s Dilemma: Before We Drown We May Die of Thirst” is written by Kenneth Weiss, a reporter from Scientific America. The article reports on the impact of climate change in Kiribati where the residents are facing the threat of drowning due to increased flooding (Weiss, 2015). This country is located between Hawaii and Australia amongst the atolls of central Pacific Ocean. It points out to the experiences of the residents of Teaoraereke during a flood where they lost their properties and lives as well. The uncertainty of their future is imminent due to the geographical structures surrounding their republic.

The author provides a detailed description of these atolls, which surround the central Pacific Ocean. The region is vulnerable to the devastating impact of climatic change due to its low height of 2 meters above the sea level (Weiss, 2015). The country, being comprised of 33 islands is likely to be submerged into water as the polar ice continues to melt because of increasing global temperatures. This is validated by coursework as two major causative factors of climatic change is global warming caused by the increased greenhouse gas emissions and its consequent result, which is, increased sea levels due to melting polar ice.

The low-lying islands of Kiribiti, according to researchers, have been expanding in the recent past as they capture sediments that are from the reefs surrounding the islands (Weiss, 2015). However, as explained in the coursework material, rising sea levels indicate the eradication of low-lying islands. The social effects of flooding within these Islands have been devastating to the residents. Poverty coupled with poor sanitation due to depleted resources has led to increase of communicable diseases as well as low supply of clean water (Weiss, 2015). The pollution of the ground water by human activities such as defecation in the bushes and beaches as well as pig rearing and body decomposition after funerals has greatly increased. This has lowered the availability of clean fresh water to the population in Kiribati thus increasing the incidences of water borne diseases and mortality rates.
