Approaches to Labor
Approaches to Labor
An example of a public organization is the Police, Fire and Emergency services. Private organizations include Apple Incorporation. The Police, Fire and Emergency organization offers security and urgent help in the event of fires or other emergencies that require their attention and expertise. Apple Incorporation on the other hand develops designs and retails computer software and consumer electronics. A public organization is more likely to have been through collective bargaining processes and have more labor union association than private organizations.
Decision making processes in a private organization is done by the board of directors. Public organization may require both the board of directors and in some cases congressional action especially if the organization provides fundamental public services such as water. Public sector workers have more right to strike as labor laws require that workers be treated fairly and paid above minimum wage. Private organizations tend to rely on company policy. The Obama administration seeks to increase the advantage and the power of the labor unions. The Bush administration altered the classification of workers who qualify for overtime. Obama’s labor management relations approach is the best as it ensures that the workers’ wellbeing is maintained.
Some states lack proper laws to protect all employees as necessary reforms on labor laws are only made to protect workers from the private sector. Conventional interest arbitration involves submission of conflict arising from disagreements of terms and conditions. The “Night Baseball” arbitration involves an arbitrator picking sides when choosing a proposal. In the Final Offer Interest arbitration, the disputant is allowed to present specified proposals. The Final Offer arbitration is the most effective as it is flexible to all the parties involved.
Canadian and United States Labor Laws
Canadian labor laws give power to the labor unions as compared to the United States labor laws. The United States should adopt a similar approach to reduce discrimination of workers in the country and increase the workers well being through strengthening labor laws. The United States should adopt the system of imposed arbitration like Canada. Management would sign contracts with labor unions and this will make labor unions more effective.
Cuba and China
Cuba has adopted neo-liberal and flexible policies which result in many non-unionized organizations and industries. This approach is detrimental to the workers as they receive low pay and work for very long hours.
Wal-Mart stores in China have recognized labor unions. Wal-Mart in the United States has however combated any attempt to recognize labor unions. Wal-Mart believes that labor unions in America would reduce their revenue, as the workers will demand higher pay.
