Question 1
This play, by Lorraine Hansberry, is very emotional. I found the entire script to be a mixture of racism and inequality, which made me sympathize with the treatment of black people. Particularly, I was touched by the horrible conditions in which the Younger family lived. Similarly, I was overwhelmed by joy at the manner in which a $10,000 check could bring hope and uplift the spirits of this family. The play is also dramatic due to the conflicting egos of the diverse family members who have different dreams, yet they are fighting for the same scarce resources.
Question 2
This play demonstrates that human behavior can change easily when faced with temptation. For example, Walter (who is the main character of the play) almost sells his family’s new house after losing the money he had invested in a liquor store. In addition, it shows that circumstances can force someone to behave in a certain manner although sometimes a strong-willed spirit overcomes any behavioral change.
Question 3
The characters embody the competing interests in a family setup. While the father, as the breadwinner wants money for investment, his son needs some for educational purposes. However, the wife just wants to take care of the home and make her family happy. The grandmother would like to distribute the money in such a way that everyone’s needs are met. Therefore, some of the family members undergo heartbreak while others triumph.
Question 4
It is initially difficult for me to comprehend the level of bigotry in the play. This is because most of the dialogue is focused on family issues and the struggles that they are undergoing. Consequently, it is relatively easy to dismiss the disdain towards the white community, but later on, the extent of segregation becomes evident.
