A Nightmare on Elm Street

Introduction

A Nightmare on Elm Street is an American supernatural horror film that was first released in 1984, and then later followed by other franchises over the years. Despite the film having different characters with the different franchises, the plot is largely centered on a group of teenagers who are being hunted down and killed by an unknown man with a burnt face in their dreams. They are perturbed by the turn of event as they are unaware who the man is, and why he is killing them. The series of events in the films is unnerving, and instills fear on the viewer, as the action is not only horrifying, but also thrilling at the same time. Nancy is one of the characters in the film, who is Freddy’s main target throughout the different franchises. She is faced with various problems, the key issue being haunted by Freddy Krueger, the man in the dreams, among other problems as played out in the film.

Discussion

The film revolves around Nancy’s friends being killed in their dreams by Freddy. After the first death, she begins experiencing similar dreams. Freddy, the man who appears to have a burdened face and wears a clawed glove, comes after Nancy. He tries to kill her in various ways, which he does not succeed. In the 2010 film, she teams up with her friend, Quentin, with whom they try to figure out who Freddy is. They scheme up a plan to grab Freddy out the dream into the real world, so that they can kill him. Freddy is Nancy’s greatest problem with him, she has to fight for her life, despite witnessing her friends’ gruesome deaths. Her fight against Freddy is sop intense that at some point, while in Quentin’s car, she struggles with him in a dream and manages to pull a piece of his sweater into the real world. In addition to fighting Freddy, Nancy has to deal with insomnia, as she and her friend struggle to stay wake. Staying awake means that they do not sleep, therefore, they cannot be haunted in their dreams. It is very frustrating for them, as the human body needs to sleep and rest for optimum performance. In the 1984 film, Nancy and the other characters begin dreaming even when awake. This goes to show the magnitude of the problems Nancy had t deal with, aside from Freddy trying to kill her.

When Nancy and Quentin try to establish the connection between Freddy and her friends, she realizes that they were all members of the same preschool. When she asks her mother, she is told that Freddy was a gardener in the preschool and he molested Nancy and her friends. Upon discovering, they set Freddy ablaze. In the 1984 film, Freddy is considered to have been a child murderer and had been torched alive by the townspeople. At this point, it makes sense that Freddy is only seeking revenge, as he believes he was violated wrongfully. With reference to the 2010 franchise, it is evident that Nancy has to deal with issues of child molestation, however much she cannot remember the incidents. In addition to that, she probably lost some of her childhood friends at a young age because Freddy murdered them. It is indeed unsettling that the same person, who molested her and her friends as a child, is also killing them one by one. This was definitely quite traumatizing for Nancy.

Throughout the films, Nancy’s friends have been killed in their dreams, with herself being saved for last by Freddy. Losing close friends is heartbreaking and makes life look bleak. Nancy attends various funerals to bury her friends. The worst part about these events is that she knows she is being targeted and that she is probably next in the line of death. It is quite sad that Nancy, despite having lost her close friends in dreams, does not have time to grieve as she is always fighting Freddy and trying to stay alive. These are very traumatizing events that no one should ever have to go through. In addition to losing her friends, Nancy has to deal with the fact that her mother becomes an alcoholic, and is struggling with the addiction. She experiences this in the 1984 film. When she manages to pull Freddy’s hat into reality, her mother, Marge, recognizes it as the child murderers. This probably sends her into shock, fear, and turns to drinking. She becomes addicted to alcohol and can barely function. Alcohol addiction has negative effects of not only the victim, but to the family members as well. Nancy is tasked with taking care of her alcoholic mother, despite trying to fight for her life in her dreams.

Conclusion

The Nightmare on Elm Street was successful as a horror film. It portrays the struggles and problems a teenager faces in her daily life. Nancy faces various pressures and people in her life. She is fighting for her life, grappling with issues about her alcoholic mother, insomnia, child molestation, and losing her friends to Freddy.
